I am a History Ph.D. candidate at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.

 

My dissertation analyzes middle-class American women's growing participation in recreational and competitive horseback riding from 1830 to 1890. I argue that women’s relationships with and through horses allowed many women to develop expertise in a historically male-dominated field, challenge gender expectations, and construct female-dominated social networks.
